Jean-Paul Gaultier he is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant and eccentric designers ever.
His dazzling and incredible career as a couturier is studded with unparalleled and unique peaks that have made the history of contemporary fashion.
In reality, however, the spark that started it all and gave us the wonderful work of the enfant prodige of French fashion must be sought in the seventh art, cinema.

The Jailbird movie was Falbalasby French director Jacques Becker, released in 1945. The film tells the story of a womanizing fashion designer who begins courting the girlfriend of a close friend, but things don’t go as planned.

I was literally seduced by the atmosphere of the film and in particular by that of a maison during the Second World Warthis is how Jean Paul Gaultier expressed himself about the film itself and why it was the illumination that then led it on the road that led it to be what it was and still is today.

Growing up in the Parisian suburbs, JPG never studied to be a designer; he was to all intents and purposes a self-taught designer who began sending his sketches to the most popular French designers of the time. It was Pierre Cardin who first glimpsed the potential and enormous talent of that very young designer, so much so that he hired him as his assistant in 1970.
However, it was in 1976 that Gaultier launched his eponymous brand, and from then on we know the story: the French designer would establish himself as one of the most eclectic and brilliant personalities in the history of contemporary fashion.

It was, however, with Peter Greenaway’s 1989 film, The cook, the thief, his wife and her loverthat JPG may finally be giving vent to her desire to be reunited with her first love. Gaultier will be the costume designer for that filmwhere Helen Mirren will wear the famous black body cut from the unmistakable bondage aesthetic, a garment that will represent from that moment on, the perfect synthesis between the work of the French stylist as a pure designer and his work as a costume designer.
He will work again in this role in The Lost City or The Lost City of Children, a 1995 French science fiction film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, set in the near future and winking at the steampunk style.

But it was in 1997 that his talent in the world of cinema manifested itself in all its greatness.
French director Luc Besson chose him as costume designer for the most expensive European-made film ever at the time, the iconic The fifth element.

Here Gaultier can really play and have fun like never before. In fact, more than 90 million dollars will be allocated for the film – for a global gross of over 264 dollars – and more than 1,000 costumes it will be done.
The aesthetics of the film will remain in the collective imagination defining an era and a style, also receiving a nomination for the Csar Awards for best costumes.

Forever indelible in the memory of all those who have seen the film are the white headbands worn by Leeloo, a being with humanoid features and played by the beautiful Milla Jovovichor the leopard suit worn by Chris Tucker – DJ Ruby Rhod in the film – to give another example.
It wasn’t just the costumes that were stellar, the cast was no less: in addition to the actors already mentioned we find Bruce Willis, Gary Oldmann, Shrewd, Mathieu Kassovitz and many others.

His being a visionary, a forerunner of times and trends – just think of his overcoming already at the time of the concept of genre to be able to immerse the characters in the film in the future in which they live (the film is in fact mainly set in 2263)- makes Jean Paul Gaultier an unrepeatable creative genius even in the world of cinema. In 2004 he will also work on the costumes for Pedro Almodvar’s La mala educacin together with Paco Delgado.

His artistic stature as an all-round costume designer and man of cinema would then become definitive in 2012, when the couturier was chosen as juror of the 65th Cannes Film Festival.
